Indian Army vs Bangladesh Army: Amid escalating tensions with India, Bangladesh is continuously enhancing its military power. The neighboring country has deployed drones purchased from Turkey along its border with India. Meanwhile, Dhaka is also in discussions with Turkey regarding the purchase of light tanks. According to reports, the country is also planning to procure J-10 fighter jets from China to further strengthen its air capabilities. Let’s take a closer look at Bangladesh’s military strength.
Currently, Bangladesh’s military ranks 35th in the Global Firepower Index 2025 out of 145 countries.
Dhaka’s defence budget stands at 3.6 billion dollars. Whereas, in the FY2024-2025 budget, the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) has been allocated Rs 6.22 lakh crore (approx. USD 75 Billion) to the sector – a 4.79 percent increase from previous year.
The total active personnel in Bangladesh’s military are 1,63,000, while the paramilitary forces number 6,80,000. Whereas, the Indian Army is the world’s second-largest military force, with over 1.4 million active personnel.
Bangladesh has a total of 320 tanks, all of which are Chinese-made.
Bangladesh possesses as many as 27 self-propelled artillery units and 437 towed artillery units.
The neighbouring country has 71 multiple-launch rocket systems.
Bangladesh Air Force has a total of 44 fighter jets, 16 transport aircraft, and 87 trainer aircraft.
The country has 73 helicopters but does not possess any attack helicopters.
The Bangladeshi navy has a total of 117 naval vessels.
Bangladesh does not have any destroyers, but it does have 7 frigates and 6 corvettes.
The Bangladeshi navy possesses only two submarines, both of which are Chinese-made.
The Indian Army is significantly stronger than the Bangladesh Army in terms of manpower and weaponry. Therefore, there is no real comparison between the two armies. Both are neighbouring countries with shared issues, but peace has been maintained for decades. Notably, India won the 1971 war, leading to the surrender of the Pakistani Army on December 16, 1971, and the subsequent formation of Bangladesh, which was formerly East Pakistan.
